98/MeNT & 2kWhat is?ModemsNetworkGeneralSpeed

Possible reasons Usb drivers wont load during reinstallation.

SYMPTOM:
Usb Cable Modem drivers cannot be found/loaded and or installed.

POSSIBLE CAUSES----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#1.
The path name to locate the drivers is wrong, (ie. D:\ ).

Solution: Insure that the customer knows what drive the disc (Floppy / CD-Rom) is located. For example if it is a Floppy its almost always the "Floppy (A)"or if CD Rom in most cases will be "(D)".

NOTE if they have more than one hard drive it will be different than D, For example if they have 2 hard drives the CD drive will probably be (E) and so on.

#2. The wrong drivers or disc (Floppy / CD-Rom) is being used.

Solution: Load the correct disc or drivers into the applicable drive.

#3. The drivers are currupt or they do not have the required drivers.

Solution: Email the customer new drivers, preferably executables (driver.exe)and tell the customer to gain access to the Internet either at a friends or work. Have them then save the drivers to a Floppy disc (tell the customer to use a blank formatted Floppy disc) and schedule a day to call the customer back to assist in the installation if it is needed or required.

#4. The inf.file with the drivers is unable to be read by Windows installer.

What is a .inf file? An information file (.inf) provides installation instructions that Windows uses to install and register software components, as well as any files required by the components. The INF file is a text file that specifies the files that need to be present for the component to run.

Solution: Got the "Device Manager" and look for "USB Composite Device" and remove it along with the problem Usb device drivers.

Solution: Ask the customer to right click the applicable drive (Floppy (A)) and select "Explore". Then have the customer right click the .inf file and select "install". This probably wont help, but hey.....go for it.If this doesnt help you will need to get the new drivers to the customer via email.

NOTE: The time you see this problem the most often is installing Usb driversfrom CD-Rom not so much Floppy's.

#5. During uninstallation they were not completey uninstalled or were uninstalled improperly.

Cause: Windows Add/Remove Programs feature and Installer/Un-installer sometimes will not install or unistall a driver and or program either completly or properly.

Solution: If a driver or program has it own Installer/Un-installer use them if available verses the Windows Add/Remove Programs or Installer/Unistaller.

Solution #2: Got the "Device Manager" and look for "USB Composite Device" and remove it along with the problem Usb device drivers.

Summary: If a program or driver is not completly unistalled or uninstalled properly especially concernig Usb device drivers. This will alot of times will make reinstalling the drivers either impossible or very problematic and time consuming.
