Security Features and Levels

Security Features

Firewall and PipeLock® are two features of the PipeRider cable modem that provide various levels of security to meet your needs.

The Safe@Home Stateful Inspection Firewall embedded in your PipeRider cable modem provides protection for your personal files and data when you are connected to the Internet. By inspecting each packet that passes through the cable modem for potentially harmful information, problems are stopped before they can reach your computer. In addition, the location of the firewall inside the cable modem protects every device connected to it.

Safe@Home is an advanced firewall and can provide your home network a high level of security. However, even Safe@Home cannot provide you with absolute protection against a determined effort to break into your system. We recommend using additional security measures to secure highly valuable or sensitive information.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The PipeLock feature enables you to suspend communication between your computer and the Internet, ensuring total security when you are not actively using the Internet. When PipeLock is ON, all Internet traffic is blocked.

Security Level Options

There are three security levels from which you can choose: Secure Pipe, Locked Pipe, and Open Pipe. The security
level can be changed by either pressing the PipeLock button on your cable modem or by setting the level on the
configuration page of the PipeLine Portal.

The default setting is Secure Pipe, which provides a secure connection to the Internet using SofaWare's Safe@Home Firewall solution. Firewall protection for an individual computer can be temporarily disabled using the Security Snooze feature. This setting is controlled from the PipeLine Portal Configuration page.

The Locked Pipe setting turns PipeLock ON, ensuring total security when you are not actively using the Internet. Some applications do not function when the firewall is enabled, such as when hosting some networking games. In such instances, you can use the Open Pipe setting to temporarily disable the firewall. This option does expose you to risk, and should only be used when absolutely necessary.
