Corrupt Firewall?-Is the firewall preventing web surfing.

First off a corrupt or messed up Software Firewall can really mess up a customers Internet Connection or in the case of this Tutorial web surfing.

There are several ways to test for this possiblity, heres 2.

#1. Have a customer attempt to surf to a https site, If they are able to surf to them, then they have port 80 on their computer blocked.

Here is a short list of HTTPS sites to test with.-------

https://www.microsoft.com

https://www.tpcx.com/

https://www.linux-community.de/

https://www.gotomypc.com/

#2. OK, Have the customer start up a DOS/Command Prompt. Its time to Telnet!

telnet / port 80 test

the "telnet" command doesn't use a web-browser, but can still try to pull information off the internet through port 80. not only does this imitate the browser in that respect, but this is one of the few ways of proving that
something has blocked port 80.

proper formatting:

C:\>telnet yahoo.com 80

this should bring up a new "telnet" program, and it should automatically try to connect and pull information off yahoo.com. it will not get graphics nor normal text, but it will get html code from yahoo.com if port 80 is open.

if port 80 is closed, or the internet connection is down for some other reason; there will be an error message "connection failed: hostname" or something of the like.

include this information in your ticket, and use it to test any situation where a customer can ping by domain name, and you need to figure out if they have a blocked port or a browser problem.

What are HTTPS sites?

https-Port number. 443

HTTPS
HTTPS is an encrypted version of HTTP implemented through the Secure Socket Layer, SSL, standard. The encrypted secure connection is created by running an ordinary HTTP connection on top of an encrypted SSL connection. Except for this, HTTPS is
like HTTP.

Creating a HTTPS port
To set up a HTTPS port you enter the protocol, HTTPS, and port number, by default 443, as you would for an HTTP port. When you press the Use these values button you will get two new options, Certificate file and Key file. If your certificate also contains your private RSA key you only need to fill in the Certificate file option. Otherwise you will have to fill in both options. The demo certificate included with Challenger contains the private RSA key, while the certificates you get from a Certificate Authority does not. It is not possible to run HTTPS IP-less. This is because the certificate contains the name of the web site and the certificate is used before the server gets a chance to see the Host header of the HTTP protocol.
