What is an INIT string and when would you use them?

Before your modem dials a phone number, it initializes (inits) the modem by sending
it a series (string) of commands. These commands configure the modesm options
for thinks like error correction, data compression, flow control and many other
parameters.

The number one reason for slow connetions speeds and disconnects is line
noise on the telephone line. One way to help minimize this is to lower the modem
speed.

There is a limit to the bandwidth that you're working with, and when there is more
noise, there is less space for signal, and performace worsens. The analog phone
line is the limiting factor in the speed of data transmission because of the noise it
naturally contributes.

Where to enter an INIT String(disabling V. 90) and where to find the list of INIT
strings for
all dialup modems.

Dialup Networking > Right Click on the dialup connection > click on properties
Click on Configure > Connection > Advanced
Under Extra Settings enter the INIT string
Click OK > OK > OK

You can find these strings at www.modemhelp.org
