MRTG-- Multi Router Traffic Grapher

The Multi Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG) is a tool to monitor the traffic load on network-links. MRTG generates HTML pages containing graphical images which provide a LIVE visual representation of this traffic.

Check http://www.ee.ethz.ch/stats/mrtg/ for an live example.

The blue line below indicates bandwidth going out from the Network (Uploads), The green line coming in (Downloads).

This is the MRTG for Laughlin, NV. Our two main points of interest are the .1 and the .9 listed here. In any FTK market, the .1 is always the router where the actual Ts feed into while the .9 is the DHCP server.

By clicking on the .1, we get more information about the circuits in a market. Here, we are concerned with the serial ports. Each serial port is one T and we can see the bandwidth in use on each by clicking on them.

This shows peak usage at around noon and 7 PM. Note that these high points never indicate that more than 41.3% of the T's capacity is in use at any given time. This shows that there is no capacity issue here.

This shows peak usage at around 5:30 PM and 7 PM. Note that these high points never indicate that more than 58.2% of the T's capacity is in use at any given time. This shows that there is no capacity issue here.

Since there is no capacity issue on either T, there is no capacity issue in this market. If you ever see capacity issues on some, but not all Ts, this may indicate a load balancing issue. Data should flow through all Ts at a roughly equal rate due to load balancing. When load balancing fails, some Ts may have capacity issues, while others show little to no utilization. When this occurs, we must have the results of the batch file from customers with slow speeds as the NOC can determine if a customer is going through a specific T by the IPs shown in the traceroutes. When using the MRTG tool, make sure to look at the percentages as well as the actual graphs as the graphs will usually scale to fit the peaks. Also, remember that any time a market shows all of it's Ts at 95%, the Circuits group is automatically notified. Whenever DHCP usage hits 95%, the IP provisioning group is automatically notified.
