Flap List Tutorial for DOCSIS Cable Modems:

One of the most valuable sources of information for the DOCSIS Cable Modems is the notoriuos Flap List. This tool is probably the best source of information concerning the condition and partcial history on the particular modem and all others that are aquired on that UBR (Universal Broadcast Router).

First go to the NOC Tools page and go to the specific market of choice and place a dot in the Flap list entry and click enter. After you click enter you will probably see a large list of Cable modems, the list will look like this below exept much larger.

MAC AddressInterfaceInsertsHitsMissesCRCPower AdjFlapTime

To find the Cable Modem you are looking for go to Edit on the the top of your browser and click "Find on this page" and enter the MAC id of the Modem of interest. Like shown below.

REMEBER TO ENTER THE MAC ID LIKE THIS 0020.40af.xxxx / NOT 00:20.40:af.xx:xx

Sometimes you may have to search for the modem using only the last four characters like this:

The results shown above for the first modem are not what you want to see. As Cathy would say its "real BAD"!

The second modem is doing rather well and this is typical in what we would like to see.

Interface:This is the Slot, Blade and uplink the Modem is aquired on. Not really what you came here to look up.

Inserts:This the number of Abnormal Attempts to modem has made to register itself on the UBR. You can safely assume we do not want to see this number high at all.

Hits:
The amount of snmp packets the headend UBR has sent out to the cable modem. This number can be high or low, What is important is in comparing it with the Misses.

Misses:
The amount of snmp packets the cable modem has replied back to the headend UBR.

CRC:
Their isnt anything you really need to know on this one other than you do not want to see it too high. But if you must know Click here for details.

Power Adj:
This is how many times the modem has had to adjust its signal to compensate for Signal Interferance or RF.As you may assume you definatley dont want this one high and if it is that is normally a clear sign of RF problems.

Also the ! symbol on the (Power Adjust) before the number indicates how many time the modem reached maximum transmit power and failed. This is real bad, you see this and its RF.

Flap:
How many times the cable modem has dropped off and the come back online.

Time:
The time the statistics of the Flap list were taken.
