Com21's Cable modem system (ComUNITY Access System) is a wide area network that uses the cable TV network. It is formed by the center modem (comCONTROLLER), management terminal(NMAPS), and the user modem (ComPORT).
Below is all the technical jargon that you may or may not be interested in. In nut shell here are some key differences in a Com21 Cable Broadband Network and a DOCSIS Cable Network.
Com21 basically decided to do things their way instead of comforming to the DOCSIS standard, It depends on who you ask on wether this is a bad thing, good thing, better or worse. They also have begun recently producing DOCSIS compliant Cable Modems.
One major difference is the ComControllers ability to create VLAN's on its Network. (Virtual Local Area Connections). Click here to learn about VLAN's. It is able to create VLANS on the same physical Network. For a DOCSIS Network to achieve similar results it must split networks by putting the Cable Modems onto what is called seperate blades and ports on the UBR thus making them seperate physical networks.

Com21 system specifications Com21's Cable modem system (ComUNITY Access System) is a wide area network that uses the cable TV network. It is formed by the center modem (comCONTROLLER), management terminal(NMAPS), and the user modem (ComPORT).
Supported by two modems, ATV Return or Telephone Return. By using Tele-phone Return it is possible to serve users in apartment/condominiums without interactive equipment.
CATV Telephone is possible by installing a Telephony Module(T-ATM200) in the CATV Telephone function cable modem expansion slot.
Anti-noise measure RF Solution is implemented by Return Path Multiplexer, Frequency Hopping, Ingress Noise Blocker, and Telephone Return functions.
With multiple service classes delivery routes can be set for flexible value points and each cable modem. VLAN function, enables division and use of one CATV network to a few networks.
With NMAPS rich network monitoring function, GUI Interface remote observation etc. can be checked in batches. Also, billing function is implemented.
